The Delhi-based franchise of audit firm PricewaterhouseCoopers today approached the Delhi High Court seeking quashing of proceedings initiated against it by the government in the aftermath of Satyam scam. It pleaded before the court that the government proceedings were illegal as they have no connection with the Bangalore-based franchise which had audited Satyam accounts.
The extra freedom given to the 26 public sector banks from this year to choose their statutory auditors has auditing companies — both those chosen and those left out — restive. They have approached the Union finance ministry and the Prime Minister’s Office to say that the decision will affect the quality of audits.

Ever since the chargesheet was filed against Satyam founder-chairman B Ramalinga Raju and other accused in connection with the Satyam scam in April 2009, the trial has been going on at the XIV Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in the city.
I am sure most of us are still sharing the Diwali happiness and good wishes with friends and family. The New Year Vikram Samvat 2066 has dawned and has already ushered in a positive atmosphere. The markets are doing well; the economy is making strides and should grow by 6.5 per cent this fiscal. The forecast growth for next year at between 7 and 7.5 per cent would most likely retain India’s status as the second fastest growing economy in the world.
Students are hereby informed that the Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, having due regard to the concerns of students belonging to Final (Old) stream, has decided to extend the Final (Old) Examination by two more attempts namely May, 2010 and November, 2010.
The Institute has received an Office Memorandum (OM) from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. As per the OM, the Registrar of Companies will prepare a panel of professionals for Technical Scrutiny of Balance Sheets filled by the Companies for the State concerned.
The government has sought clarity from auditing firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC) about their operations and business plans in India. “Come back with a plan. What is that you are responsible for? What is that you should be responsible for?” Corporate Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid told PTI while replying to questions about his meeting with senior representatives of PWC early this week. PWC has been in the news for the wrong reasons as its auditors were involved in auditing the books of accounts of fraud-stricken Satyam Computer Services.
