According to section 143(2) of the Income Tax Act, 1961(for short the Act), where a return has been furnished under section 139 of the Act, or in response to a notice under section 142(1) of the Act, the Assessing Officer(AO) or the prescribed income-tax authority, as the case may be, if, considers it necessary or expedient to ensure that the assessee has not understated the income

Under the present system of limited scrutiny under CASS (Computer Aided Scrutiny Selection) Income Taxes Cases are selected for hearing under various parameters and assessments are made basing on the books of account and evidences produced. Further notices are sent to assessees basing on information collected from the Annual Information Returns (AIR) and verified whether Returns of Incomes were filed and the income returned is correct with respect to the information collected.

Computer Assisted Scrutiny Selection (CASS) for the current year has been finalized. The Board has approved the parameters for selection of cases and cases will be visible to the Assessing Officers from 19.09.2016.
