The employee strength of foreign banks in India dropped by over six per cent in 2010, with as many as 19 of the 32 overseas lenders in the country reporting a dip. According to the ‘Statistical Tables Relating to Banks of India’ released by the Reserve Bank of India, from 29,582 in 2009, the number of employees fell to 27,742 in 2010, a fall of 6.22 per cent.
The Reserve Bank of India today released the Statistical Tables Relating to Banks in India – an annual publication that provides key information on banks. The publication covers bank-wise and bank group-wise information on major items, such as, liabilities and assets, income and expenses, non-performing assets, financial ratios, spatial distribution of offices, number of employees and details of priority sector advances. It also provides bank group-wise monthly data on some of the major items, such as, aggregate deposits, liabilities to the banking system, assets with the banking system, investments, bank credit and sector-wise and industry-wise gross bank credit.
It has been decided to introduce Interest Rate Futures on 91-Day Treasury Bills issued by Government of India. In this regard, Reserve Bank of India has issued an amendment direction IDMD.PCD.27/ED(HRK)-2010 dated March 7, 2011 under section 45W of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, which has been placed on the Reserve Bank of India website (www.rbi.org.in).
The first meeting of the sub-committee of the Financial Stability Development Council (FSDC) was held at the Reserve Bank of India office in New Delhi on Friday, the central bank said in a release. The sub-committee reviewed the developments in the macro economy and the financial markets, it said.
The government today said that Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has conducted a special inquiry into Rs 460-crore Citibank fraud case and was in the process of completing its final report. ” RBI has conducted a special scrutiny of the related accounts at Citibank, Gurgaon (branch) and other connected accounts at other banks. The final report is being completed”, Minister of state for Finance Namo Narain Meena told the Lok Sabha in a written reply.
In view of the ensuing closing of Government Accounts for the financial year 2010-11, you may please reiterate the instructions to your branches regarding introduction of special messenger arrangements at your receiving branches (situated locally) from the second fortnight of March 2011. Receiving branches not situated locally should also adopt special arrangements such as courier service etc. from the second fortnight of March 2011 for passing on challans/scrolls etc. to the Nodal/Focal Point branches so that all payments and collections made on behalf of Government towards the end of March are accounted for in the same financial year. The branches may also be instructed to take all necessary steps to ensure that the arrears, if any, are cleared before March 15, 2011.
The government today gave green signal to the Banking Laws Amendment Bill that seeks to align the voting rights in banks in proportion with the equity holding. Presently, the voting rights of a shareholder is limited to 1 per cent in state-owned banks and 10 per cent in private banks irrespective of the equity holding.
The Reserve Bank plans to upgrade its high-value online fund transfer system RTGS to enable handling of up to 50 lakh transactions a day and incorporate various new facilities for the bank customers. RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement) system facilitates online transfer of high-value funds between bank customers of different banks on real-time basis and currently handles about three lakh transactions per day.
A senior official of the Reserve Bank today said all banks would have to create a position of chief information officers (CIOs) as well as steering committees on information security at the board level at the earliest, as envisaged under its IT Vision 2011-17 released the other day. Reserve Bank executive director G Gopalakrishna, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a banking technology conference here, further said the banks will have to implement the facility of “second factor verification” at merchant establishments and ATMs shortly.
