The revised draft of the Direct Tax Code (DTC), that will replace the Income Tax Act, will be available for comments soon before it is finalised and placed before Parliament for its approval, possibly in the winter session.

Direct tax Collection for 2009-10 may fall short of target

The direct tax collection for 2009-10 is likely to be around Rs 3.80 lakh crore, missing the revised target by Rs 7,000 crore (Rs 70 billion). “The final figure will be available in mid-May when all the transactions are compiled. As on date it is somewhere around Rs 3.78 lakh crore…it may be Rs 3.80 lakh crore,” Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) chairman S S N Moorthy said at an Assocham seminar.

The income tax (I-T) department raided the premises of the South Indian Education Society (SIES) and the residences of some of its office-bearers in an operation that continued till late evening on Tuesday. The Income Tax (I-T) department on Tuesday raided the residence and office of Devendra Ahuja alias Dev, promoter of Centurion Bank and MD of 20th Century Finance company. Ahuja is also the father-in-law of film actor Bobby Deol. I-T officials have recovered documents which show the 74-year-old had transferred a major part of his property to his daughter Tanya, wife of Bobby Deol, following which the officials recorded Tanya’s statement on the matter.

The government is drawing up a tax-saving bank deposit scheme that will raise funds for cheap loans to educational institutions and students aspiring to become doctors, engineers, fashion designers and software engineers. The human resource development ministry discussed the proposal with the Planning Commission last week, and in the next one month, the concept will be crystallised, minister Kapil Sibal told.

The income-tax authorities may soon get sweeping powers to investigate and prosecute those suspected of hawala transactions, creating a strong deterrent for the channel used extensively for money laundering. The proposed changes are likely to be included in the direct taxes code and could shift the burden of proof on the accused, said an income tax department official.

Many of the officers, it is learnt, are likely to take up more lucrative posts with the private sector, sooner or later.
