The government today said it will continue to focus on fiscal consolidation and would stick to the deficit target for the current fiscal, despite the uncertainty over global crude oil prices. “We are on the fiscal consolidation path. We don’t want to occupy more space in the public borrowing, and we will stick to our fiscal deficit target and our revenue deficit target,” Finance Secretary Sushma Nath said at a CII conference here.

Karnataka Government would soon file an appeal in the Supreme Court challenging its order revoking the ban on export of iron ore, chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa said today. The state would file the appeal outlining the reasons that prompted the BJP Government to impose the ban to check illegal mining and illegal export of iron ore.

A government body has recommended that state-run BSNL should merge its counterpart MTNL and telecom equipment manufacturer ITI with itself, a move that will help turn around the loss-making telecom giant. The board strongly recommends the merger of ITI Ltd with BSNL, or its takeover by BSNL as a separate subsidiary, thereby ensuring strategic vertical integration.

Government will introduce the Lokpal Bill during the monsoon session of Parliament, and once passed, corruption cases will be handled by fast track courts for speedy disposal, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ashwini Kumar today said. Describing corruption as a “national issue” and not the concern of just an individual or any political party, Kumar told reporters here that the government”s accountability and responsibility would increase with the passage of the legislation.

The government auditor CAG on Friday said it will soon finalise its report on the conduct of Commonwealth Games which will be tabled in the next session of Parliament. “Yes…certainly,” the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) said when asked if the CWG report would be tabled in the Monsoon Session of Parliament. Rai said his office is in the final stages of drafting the CWG report. “It is being finalised. We could not table it in the Budget session as it was truncated,” he added.

Bilateral Trade Touches 20 Billion US $ . hri Anand Sharma, Union Minister for Commerce & Industry, in a business meeting with Mr. Johann Schneider-Ammann, Federal Councilor Minister for Economic Affairs of Switzerland, here today stated that, “India has always stood for an open, equitable, predictable, non-discriminatory and rule-based multilateral trading regime. India gives primacy to engagements in multi-lateral negotiations at the World Trade Organization. India is committed to successful conclusion of Doha Round and support multi-lateral and bilateral engagement with rest of the world”. He stressed that developed world is resorting to protectionist tendencies which hurt both developed and developing economies. The Minister informed, “In our lifetimes, we have seen a tectonic shift in global growth and investment patterns and while Europe and Americas dominated the economic discourse in the centuries we left behind, the 21st century is decidedly a different one in which emerging economies of Asia, Africa and Latin America are playing a much larger role. India which is home to a sixth of world’s population is finally beginning to realize its true potential on the global stage’.

Tax collection exceeds revised target for 2010-11- Finance ministry

The government today said the total tax collections-both direct and indirect-for 2010-11 have exceeded even the revised estimate on the back of strong economic activities. “I am reasonably sure that we will cross Rs 4.50 lakh crore in direct taxes…I am reasonably confident that it (indirect tax) will be around Rs 3.43 lakh crore-Rs 3.44 lakh crore,” Revenue Secretary Sunil Mitra told reporters on the sidelines of an IPPAI conference.
