Preventive Measures to Control Crime Against Women

Ministry of Home Affairs has sent a detailed advisory to all State Governments/UTs, wherein they have been, inter-alia, advised to adopt appropriate measures for swift and salutary punishment to the persons found guilty of violence against women and children, improve the quality of investigations, minimize delays in investigations of crime against women, set up ‘Crime against Women Cells’ in districts, advised to undertake gender sensitization of the police personnel, special women courts and initiate steps for security of women working in night shifts at call centers. Majority of the States/UTs have established ‘Women Cells’. Some States/UTs have also set up ‘All Women Police stations’ at district level and ‘Mahila/children help desk’ at police station level.

Minimum Wages Act,1948 – No discrimination between men and women workers

The Minimum Wages Act, 1948 does not contain any provision for discrimination between men and women workers. All the provisions of the Act equally apply to both men and women workers. In other words, female workers working in any scheduled employment including agriculture sector are entitled for same wages as fixed by the appropriate Governments for their male counterparts.

Tax on Re-Registration of Vehicles

Where an owner of a motor vehicle (other than transport vehicle) on which one-time or long-term tax has been paid, ceases to reside at the address recorded in the certificate of registration of the vehicle on account of his transfer on official duty or shift of residence, the registering authority shall, where the vehicle was registered prior to such transfer or shift of residence, on application for no objection certificate under section 48, refund the pro-rata unutilized tax on the vehicle; and the registering authority where the vehicle is being shifted shall levy and collect pro-rata tax for the remaining valid period of registration of such vehicle.

Maternity Benefit Act, 1961

8(1) Every woman entitled to maternity benefit under this Act shall also be entitled to receive from her employer a medical bonus of one thousand rupees, if no pre-natal confinement and post-natal care is provided for by the employer free of charge.
