The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) has informed that at present some of the insurance companies resort to online sale of insurance products through their websites/portals in addition to sale through the conventional distribution channels. However there is no proposal from any insurer for sale of their entire policies on online mode.

Please refer to paragraphs 77 to 80 of the Second Quarter Review of Monetary Policy 2011-12 on the above subject (extract enclosed). To enhance the penetration of banking in rural and semi-urban areas, domestic scheduled commercial banks (excluding RRBs) were permitted vide circular DBOD.No.BL.BC.65/22.01.001/2009-10 dated December 1, 2009 to open branches in Tier 3 to Tier 6 centres (with population up to 49,999 as per Census 2001) and in the rural, semi-urban and urban centres in North-Eastern States and Sikkim without having the need to take permission from Reserve Bank of India in each case, subject to reporting.

Keeping in view the rapid technological developments in the Securities Markets should not overshadow the risks that these innovations pose to the efficiency and integrity of markets, SEBI vide circular no. MIRSD/DPS-III/ Cir-22 /2008 dated July 23, 2008, had mandated that exchanges shall conduct an annual system audit by a reputed independent auditor. Similar framework was also prescribed for depositories vide letter no. MIRSD/DPS-III/132833/2008 dated July 23, 2008.

Insurance regulator IRDA on Thursday came out with guidelines (Given Below) allowing life insurance companies, which have been in business for over 10 years, to raise funds from the public through IPOs. The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA), however, will decide the size of the public issue, it said in a notification. As per the guidelines, promoters of the insurance companies will also be allowed to offload their stake in the company.

In exercise of the powers conferred by section 157 of the Customs Act, 1962 (52 of 1962), the Central Board of Excise and Customs hereby makes the following regulations further to amend the Courier Imports and Exports (Clearance) Regulations, 1998, namely :- 1. (1) These regulations may be called the Courier Imports and Exports (Clearance) Amendment Regulations, 2011. (2) They shall come into force on the date of their publication in the Official Gazette.
