CA. Roy was born on 4th October, 1963 and became the youngest President of the ICAI in the year 1998-99 at the age of 34. He was elected to the Central Council for the first time for the term 1995-98 and was elected as the Vice President in the first term itself. He served the Council for two terms from 1995 to 2001. Prior to that, he was elected to the Eastern India Regional Council for the term 1992-95. During his tenure in the EIRC which he served for one term, he served as its Secretary, Vice Chairman and Chairman.

ICAI planning to introduce three-month mandatory training course after CA course

New Delhi: Accounting regulator, Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), is planning to introduce a three-month mandatory training course for its students who pass the chartered accountancy and accounting technician examination every year. This would mean that a student after qualifying three year chartered accountancy course and one year accounting technician course will have to undergo an additional three months training programme.

Govt asked UBI to get all its branches audited for high-value transactions

Taking a serious note of Union Bank of India (UBI) not reporting high-value transactions to it, the government has asked the state-owned bank to immediately carry out an audit of all its branches to check for such large deposits that have gone unreported.The Income Tax department, during a probe into alleged money laundering by former Jharkhand chief minister Madhu Koda, had stumbled on a bank account at one of UBI’s branches in Zaveri Bazar in Mumbai where approximately Rs214 crore had been deposited in cash between January five and March 30, 2007.

FM likely to drop the proposal to tax religious trusts

The finance ministry is likely to drop the proposal to tax religious trusts. The proposal formed part of the direct taxes code and had raised eyebrows both within and outside the finance ministry. “The issue has been raised in the finance ministry’s internal discussions. We are discussing whether the exemption was removed with intent or by mistake,” said a finance ministry official.

CBDT called for thorough review of the direct tax code

Corporate India is not the sole critic of the Direct Taxes Code. The code, precursor to a brand new income tax law, has found opposition from within government, too. An internal committee of the Central Board of Direct Taxes, the principal policy-maker in the domain, has called for a thorough review of the code, including a revision of the income tax slabs and the definition of ‘income from salaries’.
