The roadmap to implement a countrywide goods and services tax (GST) has entered its final lap, with the Centre easing its federal stronghold to make it happen. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee will seek Cabinet approval for the Constitution Amendment Bill this week that would pave the way for its introduction in Parliament next week before its monsoon session comes to an end.

The revised draft of the Constitution Amendment Bill on GST will drop the contentious issue of giving veto powers to the Union Finance Minister in order to bring states on board. The Centre, in a redrafted constitutional amendments bill for the proposed Goods and Services Tax (GST), has suggested that the states also be given a veto power along with the Centre in the proposed GST council so that every decision taken by the council is approved only when all the states and the Centre agree to it.

These Designated officers are appointed and conferred powers under section 3 of Punjab VAT Act 2005.
