The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has introduced a new “Kind of Business” (KoB) for Ayurveda Aahara within the Food Safety and Compliance System (FoSCoS). This decision, effective September 1, 2025, addresses the lack of a specific licensing and registration category for these products since the notification of the Food Safety and Standards (Ayurveda Aahara) Regulations, 2022. The new KoB, defined as a food prepared according to specific Ayurvedic recipes and processes, requires a Central License with an annual fee of Rs. 7500 plus GST. It outlines specific requirements for different product categories (Category A and B) and their claims, mandating a prior approval letter from FSSAI for certain products and health-related claims. This change provides a standardized framework for the manufacturing of Ayurveda Aahara, ensuring regulatory compliance for Food Business Operators (FBOs) and facilitating the market for these products. It also clarifies that licensing for trade and export of these products will follow existing criteria.
