The employer and employee contribute to the Provident Fund each @ 12% of wages. Out of employer share of Provident Fund, 8.33% contribution is diverted to Employees’ Pension Fund.The rate of contribution by the Employer to Employees’ Pension Fund has not been raised by the Central Government for the last one decade as the total contribution as percentage of wages is at sufficient level i.e. 25.66%.

The tug of regulatory war over unit linked insurance plans (ULIPs) has ended with regulatory regime to be retained with insurance regulatory body (IRDA). The Central Government has promulgated an Ordinance (legislation) to the effect that ULIPs shall be regulated by IRDA only, thus ending the ongoing claims by both regulators- SEBI and IRDA to regulate the ULIP schemes.

Central Government has announced a new pension scheme (NPS) w.e.f. 1st May, 2009 established under Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority. Employers may soon be required to make mandatory provident fund contributions to workers with a salary of up to Rs 15,000 a month instead of Rs 6,500 at present. Union labour minister Mallikarjun Kharge is likely to ratify a proposal to this effect on Saturday, when he presides over a meeting of the Employees’ Provident Organisation’s Central Board of Trustees.
