The issue regarding furnishing of a cash security equal to 2% of the CIF value of the goods sought to be imported under Project Import has further been examined by the Board. In view of the reduction in import duty and the inordinate delay associated with finalisation of the said project imports, it has been decided to do away with the practice of taking cash security.

The government today proposed to levy Minimum Alternate Tax (MAT) of 18.5 per cent on the book profits of Special Economic Zone developers and units, which was termed as a ‘setback’ by the players. The government today proposed to increase the service tax on life insurance policies to 1.5 per cent from 1 per cent, a move that would increase the premium cost for policyholders. “It is being provided that tax shall be charged in the portion of the premium… the composition rate is also being increased from 1 per cent to 1.5 per cent,” Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said in his 2011-12 Budget speech.

To reduce compliance burden of small taxpayers, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today proposed to introduce a new simplified income tax return form ‘Sugam’. “I propose to introduce a new simplified return form ‘Sugam’ to reduce the compliance burden of small taxpayers who fall within the scope of presumptive taxation,” Mukherjee said in his Budget speech.
