Direct tax Collection for 2009-10 may fall short of target

The direct tax collection for 2009-10 is likely to be around Rs 3.80 lakh crore, missing the revised target by Rs 7,000 crore (Rs 70 billion). “The final figure will be available in mid-May when all the transactions are compiled. As on date it is somewhere around Rs 3.78 lakh crore…it may be Rs 3.80 lakh crore,” Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) chairman S S N Moorthy said at an Assocham seminar.

We do not find that on all the four counts, demand was raised on the ground of clearance of goods with intent to evade payment of duty. Demand relating to third count and relating to samples was clearly demand on account of legal issues so it cannot be held that there was intention to evade payment of duty. So penalty in respect of these two counts is not sustainable.

Income tax Department raids Educational institution SIES

The income tax (I-T) department raided the premises of the South Indian Education Society (SIES) and the residences of some of its office-bearers in an operation that continued till late evening on Tuesday. This is probably the first time an educational institution in the city has been raided by I-T officials.

In Appendix 37A, the following Note is added against the VKGUY entry No. 6 of Table 1A, and entry No. 18 of Table 2. “For the purpose of claiming VKGUY benefit, the admissible FOB value for export products covered by ITC HS Code ‘0305’ (falling under this VKGUY entry) shall be the same as admissible in terms of the Public Notice No. 56/2009-14 dated 20.04.2010”
