Tightening the noose around the audit companies having arrangements with global firms, the accounting regulator ICAI has sought details of their tie-ups with MNCs to check surrogate practices. The decision to seek tie-up details from CA firms, especially those associated with the Big 4– PWC, Ernst & Young, KPMG and Deloitte–follows a report by an Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) committee on the multi-crore Satyam scam.
Reserve Bank of India is likely to squeeze money supply and make borrowings costlier further in its monetary policy on Tuesday to tame inflation which has come close to ten per cent, say bankers. The apex bank, however, may not aggressively tighten the monetary policy and is likely to resort to only a moderate 0.25 per cent hike in short-term borrowing rates and mandatory bank deposits with RBI, bankers said.
Their letter expressing a desire to quit owing to the government’s indifference will not cost two doctors their job, thanks to a Bombay high court order. The state government had challenged an order of the Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal (MAT) on January 19 this year allowing two doctors, from the department of obstetrics and gynecology of the JJ Hospital at Byculla, to return to their jobs by holding that the “resignations tendered by the applicants (the two doctors) were under duress and by way of frustration.”

The committee set up by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) is considering various options to retain minimum alternate tax (MAT) with the new proposed base of gross assets. The Direct Taxes code, proposed last year, had recommended shifting the base for calculation of MAT from book profit to gross assets, to make it an investment-linked, and not profit-linked, tax. However, stiff opposition from industry has led to reworking of MAT.
A day after conducting a search operation at the Indian Premier League (IPL) headquarters in Mumbai, the income tax (I-T) department has decided to expand the net and bring all 10 IPL teams under its scanner. The department will now examine who owns and funds all the teams. On Friday, a team of five I-T officials, including two deputy directors, visited the Punjab Cricket Association office in Mohali which houses the IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab. A similar exercise was undertaken at Rajasthan Royals office in Jaipur.
