An internal probe by the Income Tax department, to detect the occurrence of a spate of refund frauds, has found that swindlers have hacked into the user-ids of retired officials and unclaimed suspense refunds were generated to siphon off the taxpayers hard-earned money.

Step 1: Make sure you have received an intimation under section 143 (1) from CPC Bangalore for the E-returns filed by you for AY 2009-10 or later. Step 2: Carefully examine the intimation to see if the computation by CPC is correct even if different from what was expected by you. The government today said it paid Rs 68,994 crore as income tax refunds till November this fiscal as compared to Rs 75,160 crore for the entire 2010-11. In a written reply to Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Finance S S Palanimanickam also said the number of refund claims pending as on October 1 stood at 19.41 lakh.
Only 6.74 lakh claims for refund of income-tax are pending with the I-T Department after it launched a special drive to clear the pendencies, Parliament was informed today. Responding to a query in the Lok Sabha, the Finance Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, said while the department does not maintain records on the quantum of income-tax refunds claimed, as of March 31, 2011, approximately 38.26 lakh returns claiming refund were pending for processing.
The Income Tax Department entertains queries for all assessees regarding the refunding of income tax through the Tax Information Network (TIN). Driven by a hefty increase in tax refunds which more than doubled in the first quarter of the current fiscal, net direct tax collections dropped by almost 17% during the same period to Rs 57,268 crore. The net direct direct tax collections stood at Rs 68,675 crore in the same period last fiscal.
In a bonanza for the loss making telecom PSU, state-run MTNL today received over Rs 177 crore as income tax refund for the year 2010-11. MTNL has received a refund order amounting to Rs 177.76 crore from the Income Tax Department pertaining to Assessment Year 2010-11, MTNL said in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange.
Amid fears of slowdown in tax collection in the current fiscal, the Finance Ministry today indicated that it may go slow on disbursement of pending income tax refunds. The indication was given by Revenue Secretary Sunil Mitra at the annual conference of chief commissioners and directors general of income tax here.
