Finance Minister, Shri Pranab Mukherjee has directed the Income Tax Department to make all efforts to achieve the revised direct tax target of Rs.4 lakh crores. Addressing the All India Conference on Tax Deduction at Source (TDS) here today, Shri Mukherjee congratulated the department on reaching tax collection figure of Rs.2.50 lakh crore by December 2009 showing a growth rate of around 8.5%.

The government will allow companies to adjust the fringe benefit tax (FBT) paid by them against the advance tax due in the March quarter, reducing the hazard of claiming a refund and slightly improving profits at a time of rising costs, said an income-tax department official. “The Central Board of Direct Taxes has taken an in-principle decision to allow corporates to adjust FBT paid in the first quarter against their advance tax,” he said.

The finance ministry has quietly initiated the process of opening up the income tax files of politicians belonging to all parties and tallying their income statements with the affidavits filed by them with the Election Commission during the 2009 parliamentary polls. The government has decided to shelve the introduction of the unique transaction number, which tax payers need to quote along with permanent account number when tax is deducted/collected at source.The scheme was to have come into force from the new year. However, the finance ministry has not ruled out the possibility of introducing a new identity number like UTN from the next fiscal, in addition to the permanent account number to ensure prompt verification and granting of tax credits to tax payers.

The forthcoming Union budget may have an anti-avoidance provision, which can effectively check convoluted transactions devised exclusively for the purpose of evading paying taxes in India. The finance ministry, said revenue department officials, is contemplating the idea of vesting powers with the commissioners of Income-tax (I-T) to declare a transaction a sham, if there is a reason to believe that its purpose is to avoid tax in this country.

The date for rolling out the Goods and Services Tax could be announced on January 8, the Chairman of the Empowered Committee on State Finance Ministers, Asim Dasgupta, said today. “There will be a joint statement after a meeting with Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on January 8 on GST rollout,” Dasgupta told reporters on the sidelines of the 23rd industrial trade fair, organised by the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry here.
