Vodafone taxation case – I-T dept may not file review petition

The income tax department may not go in for filing a review petition on the Supreme Court’s judgement on the Vodafone taxation case. Top sources in the department said that a 10-member ‘core committee’, which has been specially constituted, will go into the details of the order. But the department may take a view not to file a review petition against the order which was delivered by a three-member Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice S H Kapadia on Friday, the sources said.

As an ongoing attempt to enable the members to keep pace with the latest developments in direct taxes, the Direct Taxes Committee of ICAI has entered into an arrangement with Taxmann, a reputed and a well known publisher, wherein Taxmann has agreed to provide all materials that are published and made available by it as a part of its standard practice and procedure on its website www.taxmann.com at a subsidized price of Rs. 3500/- p.a. vis-a- vis its market value which is Rs.7500/-. With this, the Committee has tried to make available, in a timely manner, relevant educational resources at a subsidized cost to the members, which in turn would enable them to discharge their functions in an effective manner.

High-value term deposits in banks may not be subjected to tax deducted at source (TDS) if the finance ministry agrees to proposals made by banks on Thursday. In a pre-budget meeting with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, bankers proposed that the limit on interest from deposits beyond which TDS is required to be deducted be increased from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000 considering the surge in volume of transactions and inflation over the last few years.
