As per the data provided, the total number of tax audit returns filed in respect of the financial year 2010-11 was 16, 16,096 which were conducted by 59,472 auditors. The data so provided is being further processed with regard to fake membership numbers, membership numbers which exceeded the specified number (ceiling) of tax audit assignments, etc. In order to prevent misuse of membership numbers of tax auditors, we have been given assurance that from next year onwards the uploading of tax audit report along with digital signatures would be made mandatory.
The petitioner filed his return of income for assessment years 1990-91 to 1993-94 together with audit reports under Section 44AB, on 19 November 1993, 23 July 1993 and 30 December 1993. THE Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has opposed State Bank of India’s (SBI) decision to appoint a single audit firm for its tax audit for the current fiscal, a move which it says could compromise its quality of audit as opposed to the bank’s present practice of getting the work done by multiple firms. The ICAI, which earlier approached SBI’s top management raising its objection on the issue but did not got a favourable response, is now planning to approach the Reserve Bank of India as it fears that the move could see other banks following suit. “

Peer Review Board was established by the Council of the Institute in March 2002 to conduct the system of PR. As you must be aware, it has been made mandatory for the auditors of the listed company to undergo PR on/before 31st March 2009. If they fail to do so, their reappointment is made invalid.
