FM asked to retain tax rates at existing levels and to increase exemption limits

Worried over the impact of global financial turmoil on the economy, India Inc today asked the finance ministry to retain tax rates at existing levels, but increase exemption limits to promote growth. In their customary pre-Budget meeting with finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, industry leaders also demanded that healthcare services should be kept outside the ambit of service tax and minimum alternate tax (MAT) be rationalised.

In a move to further make Train Reservation Ticketing System passenger friendly, the Ministry of Railways has decided to permit Short Messaging Service (SMS) sent by its PSU, Indian Railways Catering & Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) containing vital details as an instrument on par with the Electronic Reservation Slip (ERS). This has come into effect from 1st February, 2012.

It was revised and the revised scheme came into effect from November, 2011. Bhutan has expressed happiness over acceptance of their request of exemption from application of any export bans on essential commodities. The Minister of Commerce, Industry and Textiles, Shri Anand Sharma, during his meeting with Mr. Lyonpo Khandu Wangchuk, Minister for Economic Affairs of Bhutan ,here today, informed that Director General of Foreign trade has issued notification exempting Bhutan from the application of export ban on Milk Powder, Wheat, Edible Oil, Pulses and Non-Basmati Rice with annual limits indicated by the Bhutanese side.

Mahindra Satyam receives provisional attachment order from Income Tax Department

Mahindra Satyam today said it has received a provisional attachment order from the Income Tax Department attaching land and buildings of the company. The company had received a provisional attachment order dated January 30, 2012, from the Additional Commissioner of Income Tax (ACIT), Central Range — 3, Hyderabad attaching land and buildings of the company, it said in a filing to the BSE.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has today released a Pre-consultation Paper on “Allocation of Spectrum in 2G band in 22 Service Areas by auction” for comments of the stakeholders.The Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in its Judgment dated 2nd February 2012 in the writ petitions no 423/2010 and 10/2010, has directed TRAI to make fresh recommendations for grant of licence and allocation of spectrum in 2G band in 22 Service Areas by auction, as was done for allocation of spectrum in 3G band.

SC Cancels 122 licenses for mobile networks issued during A Raja’s tenure as Telecom Minister

The Supreme Court has cancelled 122 licenses for mobile networks issued during A Raja’s tenure as Telecom Minister and has asked the telecom regulator TRAI to make fresh recommendations on allotment of the licenses through auction within four months. In a second crucial verdict, the court refused to order an investigation into the role of Home Minister P Chidambaram in the telecom scam, asking a CBI trial court to decide on this instead within two weeks.
