The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme was launched by the Prime Minister of India on 24th February 2019. However, the Scheme takes effect from 1st December 2018.

The Scheme is a Central Sector Scheme providing income support, basically, to the families of the landholding farmers in India. The Scheme is briefly explained in the current article.

Brief history of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme-

The Scheme, with name ‘Rythu Bandhu Scheme’ was first implemented by the Government of Telangana. However, due to the over positive outcome of the said Scheme, the Government of India launched the same with the name ‘PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme’.

The main objectives of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme are-

  • To supplement the financial needs of the small and marginal farmers for procuring various inputs for safeguarding proper crop health and appropriate yields.
  • To help farmer families from falling in the controls of money lenders.

Notably, the Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi, lastly released funds of more than INR 19,500 Crores as 9th Instalment benefiting around 9.75 Crore farmer families under the Scheme.

Eligibility under Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme-

All the landholder farmer families are eligible to avail of the benefits under the Scheme. Notably, under the Scheme, the landholder farmer family means a family, consisting of husband, wife and minor child/ children, owning cultivable land as per the land records of the respective state/ UT.

Exclusions under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme-

The following listed categories of beneficiaries falling under higher economic status are excluded from availing the benefit under the scheme-

1. Each and every institutional landholder.

2. Any member of farmer family belongs to any of the following categories-

a. Past and current-

i. Holder of constitutional posts,

ii. Ministers or State Ministers,

iii. Members of Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha or State Legislative Assemblies/ Councils,

iv. Mayors of Municipal Corporations,

v. Chairpersons of District Panchayats.

b. Superannuated or retired pensioners earning monthly pension amounts more than INR 10,000. However, the same excludes Multi Tasking Staff, Class IV and Group D employees.

c. Every person who paid an income tax during the last Assessment Year.

d. Currently serving or already retired officers and employees of-

i. Ministries, offices and departments of Central Government or State Government,

ii. Central or State Public Sector Entities and attached offices or self-governing institutions under Government,

iii. Regular employees of the Local Bodies.

e. Falling within the definition of Non-Resident Indians as per Income Tax Act.

f. Professionals like-

i. Doctors,

ii. Lawyers,

iii. Chartered Accountants,

iv. Engineers,

v. Architects who are registered with professional bodies.

Financial benefit available under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme-

Under the Scheme, financial support of INR 6,000 per year is made available to all the eligible farmer families who are having cultivable lands in their name. Notably, the benefit is available to the eligible farmer families irrespective of the size of the landholdings.

The said financial benefit of INR 6,000 is given in the following three instalments-

Different ways to apply under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme-

There are different ways through which eligible farmers can apply under the Scheme. The same is narrated hereunder-

1. Application via PM Kisan portal (i.e. online).

2. Application via Common Service Centres.

3. Application via revenue officials or village patwaris or other designated officers/ agencies.

Steps for filing an online application under Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme-

By following the below steps one can easily obtain registration under the PM Kisan Scheme-

STEP 1 – Visit site https://pmkisan.gov.in/.

STEP 2 – Click on ‘New Farmer Registration’.

STEP 3 – Select appropriate from the given option i.e., Rural Farmer Registration or Urban Farmer Registration.

STEP 4 – Enter the following details-

  • Aadhaar No.,
  • Mobile Number,
  • Select state from the dropdown list,
  • Enter the code.

STEP 5 – Click ‘Send OTP’.

STEP 6 – Enter the OTP which will be received via registered mobile number.

STEP 7 – Registration form will be displayed, wherein, the personal and banking details of the applicant is to be filed.

STEP 8 – Post confirmation of all the details, the applicant should submit the registration form.

  • Aadhaar card,
  • Voter ID and identity card,

Accordingly, PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme beneficiaries can easily apply for Kisan Credit Card and get short-term loans with low interest rates.
