CBI arrested three for cheating CA, sent to judicial custody

Three persons, including a former IAF staffer, who were arrested by the CBI for cheating a chartered accountant of over Rs 75 lakh, were on Wednesday remanded in judicial custody by a sessions court. The accused had allegedly cheated the complainant on the pretext of helping him to sell his products and getting some of his projects pending with the government cleared.

Patna HC issues directive on alleged excise scam

The Patna high court on Thursday issued a directive for making the state government a respondent in a writ petition seeking CBI probe into the alleged excise scam. A single bench presided by Justice Samarendra Pratap Singh asked the petitioner, Ajit Sarthi, to make the state government a respondent in the case.

CVC advises major penalty against 15 officers from Central Board of Excise & Customs

THE Central Vigilance Commission disposed of 1266 cases during April 2010 referred to it for advice. The Commission advised imposition of major penalty against 99 officers including 15 from Central Board of Excise & Customs, 13 from State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur, 11 from Coal India Ltd., 8 from M/o Railways, 7 each from UCO Bank and Bank of Baroda, 5 from MCD, 4 each from Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and Department of Telecommunications, 3 each from Canara Bank and DDA.

Govt may not extend tax concessions for export-oriented units (EoUs) beyond March

The Union Government might not review or consider the extension of the Sunset Clause to the export-oriented units (EoUs), beyond the earlier set deadline of March 31, 2011. “There is no discussion on this (extension of sunset clause) now, it might not be considered,” said Dr Rahul Khullar, Union Secretary for Commerce and Industries.

The Income Tax department will soon launch an Internet-based grievance redressal system for taxpayers to lodge their complaints with taxman. The new online facility will also enable taxpayers to register their complaints and put applications to the I-T Ombudsman present in 12 cities across the country including Mumbai and Delhi, the two topmost tax paying regions respectively.
