The Income Tax department today said it continues to enjoy the power to tap telephone conversations, as was given to it earlier in 2006. Power of interception stays with the CBDT and there is no change in the factual background when the power was given in 2006, and at present circumstances are identical, Sudhir Chandra, the outgoing chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) told reporters here.
The Income Tax Department today said it aims to disburse refunds of over Rs 1 lakh crore this fiscal, against Rs 73,000 crore given in the previous fiscal. We intend to refund approximately Rs 1 lakh crore this fiscal, the outgoing Chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Sudhir Chandra said here while exuding confidence of achieving the direct tax collection target for 2011-12.
The Reserve Bank of India has cancelled the licence of Jalagoan-based Chopda Urban Co-operative Bank as it had ceased to be solvent and depositors were being inconvenienced by continued uncertainty. The banking regulator delivered the order cancelling the bank’s licence after close of business on May 24, a release said on Tuesday.

CBI is likely to investigate the role of a Mauritius-based company for alleged irregularities in executing over Rs 70 crore contracts for providing consultancy for Commonwealth Games-related works after receiving a reference from Sports Ministry in this regard. The Reserve Bank of India today launched 24th round of the Inflation Expectations Survey with April-June 2011 as the current reference period. The Survey seeks qualitative responses from households on price changes (general prices as well as prices of specific product groups) in the next three months as well as in the next one year and quantitative responses on current, three-month ahead and one-year ahead inflation rates. The Reserve Bank will use results of this Survey as one of the important inputs to the monetary policy formulation.

As many as 85 lakh salaried tax payers with an annual income of up to Rs 5 lakh will not have to file income-tax return from now onwards, a finance ministry official said. No income-tax returns would be required for salaried persons earning up to Rs 5 lakh per annum. We would notify this in first week of June, outgoing Chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes Sudhir Chandra told reporters here.
