A new Audit Advisory Board (AAB) has been constituted under Comptroller & Auditor General of India, Shri Vinod Rai, who is the ex-officio Chairman of the Board. The main function of the Board will be to advise the Comptroller and Auditor General of India in matters relating to audit and suggest improvements in the performance and focus of audit within the framework of the constitution and statutory mandate of the CAG. The members will function in an honorary capacity for a period of two years.
The Union Cabinet today gave its approval for introducing a Legislative Amendment Bill to amend Section 28 of the Customs Act, 1962 (52 of 1962) to retrospectively recognize specified Customs officers as ‘proper officers’ for assessment of Customs duty thereby validating large number of Show Cause Notices involving substantial Customs revenue that are otherwise rendered invalid as a consequence of a judgement of the Hon’ble Supreme Court.
The Union Cabinet today approved the proposal for the enactment of a new legislation in the form of the Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Bill, 2011 to replace the existing Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Act, 1988 and for its introduction in Parliament. During the process of formulating the rules for implementing certain provisions of the present Act which was passed in 1988, it was found that owing to infirmities in the legislation, formulation of the rules would not be possible without a comprehensive legislation by repealing the Act.

Can a Chernobyl type accident take place in Indian Nuclear Power Plants? Nuclear power has a very good safety record for a period spanning more than three decades. The Three Mile Island (TMI) accident in March, 1979 and the Chernobyl accident in April, 1986, Have raised apprehensions in the minds of the public all over the world. In the case of TMI, no radiation injury had occured to any member of the Public. In fact all the safety systems had worked as designed and no radioactivity was released to the atmosphere. Technical Director heads the Technical Directorate which provides support to the Accounting Standards Board, Committee for Implementation of Indian Accounting Standards (IFRS), Committee for Accounting Standards for Local Bodies, Research Committee, Expert Advisory Committee and other assignments relating to providing inputs to the accounting pronouncements issued by the Institute. The work includes liaising with the relevant international bodies, such as International Accounting Standards Board and the Governmental and Regulatory Authorities, such as Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Reserve Bank of India, Securities Exchange Board of India, Insurance Regulatory Development Authority and other such authorities on accounting matters.

Ministry of Company Affaisrs has issued General General Circulars No. 33/2011 dated 01.06.2011 wherein it was informed that in order to ensure corporate governance and proper compliances of provisions of Companies Act, no request, whether oral, in writing or through e-forms, for recording any event based information / changes shall be accepted by the Registrar of Companies from such defaulting companies, unless they file their updated Balance Sheet and Profit & Loss Accounts and Annual Return with the Registrar of Companies.
Income Tax Department has started processing of TDS returns for 2010-11 (u/s 200A) and earlier years (u/s 201). All ‘defaults’ information, those processed after 01-04-2011, are now made available at www.tin-nsdl.com. (TAN registration login). The defaults will be raised as & when processed and will be kept updated in this area. It will be in a Zipped Excel sheet (no password) and quarter wise separate files will be available. (for which defaults are identified).
