The direct taxes code (DTC) approved by the Cabinet gives a reprieve to special economic zones, or SEZs, till 2014 from the proposed regime, but has imposed a 20% minimum alternative tax, which is likely to be opposed by the industry.
The Direct Tax Bill has given bonanza to individual savers, as proposed in the revised Direct Tax Code (DTC) circulated in June 2010. For individuals, the bill has proposed to continue with exempt-exempt-exempt (EEE) method of taxation on investments up to Rs 3 lakh in a fiscal year in provident fund, pension fund and pure life insurance products. Under EEE, tax will not be levied during all the three stages — when investment is made, interest earned and when the money is withdrawn.
The decision to hike Minimum Alternate Tax (MAT) rate to 20% from 18% now is being seen as a retrograde step by tax experts. However, the Direct Tax Code (DTC) as a whole, which the government plans to introduce in Parliament on Monday, is being seen as a step towards taking the Indian direct taxation system to global standards, tax practitioners and top company officials said.
Direct Tax Code (DTC) Bill introduced in Lok Sabha on Monday, August 30,2010 by Finance Minister Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, Will now be applicable from April 1, 2012 instead of earlier proposed date April 1,2011. This bill comparatively offers lower benefits as compared to the original bill. Download DTC Bill 2010 Highlights of DTC are as […]

Individuals and companies can expect some relief in the Direct Taxes Code (DTC), with the government planning to widen personal income-tax slabs, enhance the exemption limit and remove levies on corporate tax. This comes with the Cabinet clearing the Direct tax code which will be introduced in Rajya Sabha, and referred it to a select committee, during the monsoon session.
In a move that could leave more money in the hands of people, the Government on Thursday proposed to raise exemption limit on income tax from the present Rs 1.6 lakh to Rs 2 lakh. The Cabinet approved the much-awaited Direct Taxes Code (DTC) Bill, which is likely to be tabled in Parliament during the ongoing Monsoon session and thereafter it may be referred to standing committee.
The much awaited Direct Taxes Code Bill is likely to be introduced in the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament itself, the Revenue Secretary, Mr Sunil Mitra, has indicated. “We do expect the DTC to be introduced in Parliament in this session. This is what the Finance Minister has promised in public forum and we intend to do our best to make it happen,” Mr Mitra told reporters on the sidelines of a CII event here.
Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma today said that he has conveyed investor concerns over the proposed withdrawal of fiscal benefits to SEZs to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and assured the industry of protecting the exemptions.
Companies into hydrocarbon exploration and production business have asked the Government to remove uncertainties over tax and marketing regime before the ninth round of bidding for oil and gas areas is launched later this year.
