When the Court assembled today, Ms. Sonia Sharma, representing UOI, rose to inform the Court that Mr. A.S. Chandiok, ASG, was indisposed (food poisoning). The matter thereupon was adjourned to 9th May. It was however, made clear by CJ Mr. Dipak Misra that no more adjournments would be granted. In case, any one else is unable to cause appearance, the case must still be argued by nominee. It was assured by Mr. Mukesh Anand, Sr. Counsel.

Soon PAN may be mandatory for Cash Purchase Sale of bullion or jewellery and Cash Payment of life insurance premium

The income tax (I-T) department may make quoting of PAN in documents for sale and purchase of bullion or jewellery involving cash transfer of Rs 500,000 or more mandatory. PAN may also be required for cash payment of Rs 100,000 or more as life insurance premium, amid concerns that insurgents may be parking funds in high-value insurance policies. The department is also considering changes in the limits for cash payment for foreign travel. At present, the cap is Rs 25,000, including fare, the fee of a travel agent/tour operator and purchase of foreign currency.

CBDT seeks additional 22,000 staff to strengthen operations

Aiming to give more teeth to the investigation against black money, Income Tax Department hit by staff shortage today said it has sought an additional 22,000 staff to strengthen its various operations. Besides, the tax department will redeploy its existing manpower towards intelligence gathering, investigations and prosecutions.

The regulations governing mergers, acquisitions and combinations under the Competition Act would be finalised by May 1, and implemented from June 1, said Minister for Corporate Affairs, Murli Deora, here today. The revised draft of regulations is in the final stages and we expect the notification to be finalised by May 1,” he told reporters at an event organised by the Indian Merchants Chamber (IMC) here today.

There have been a number of articles on the Cabinet Secretary’s report regarding tapping of telephones which appeared in some section of the media. It is important that the correct factual position is presented to the media. The provisions for authorization of interception are contained in Section 5(2) of Indian Telegraph Act, 1885 read with Rule 419(A) of the Indian Telegraph Rules, 1951 as well as Section 69 of the Information Technology Act, 2000 read with Information Technology (Directions for Interception or Monitoring or Decryption of Information) Rules, 2009.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday arrested sacked Commonwealth Games (CWG) Organizing Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi in connection with his role in the AM Films and TSR scams. The arrest order was carried out after the CBI had questioned Kalmadi extensively on the two incidents, particularly on the documents relating to the two deals.

Supreme Court to hear petition on IPO scam and NSDL's role in it

The Supreme Court will hear a petition tomorrow that seeks directions to market regulator Sebi to take action on the report of a high-powered committee which had probed the IPO scam of 2006 and NSDL’s role in it. A bench comprising Justices RV Raveendran and AK Patnaik will hear the petition.
