The Direct Taxes Code is unlikely to give much relief to income tax payers as the finance ministry today said the higher slabs, proposed earlier, may be altered in the Bill. The move is aimed at offsetting the revenue losses arising from the new proposal to drop the earlier plan to tax provident and pension funds at the time of withdrawal and levy MAT on gross assets and not profits.

The assessee, a private limited company, provided for depreciation in its Profit & loss account by adopting the rates specified in the Income-tax Rules and computed its “book profits” u/s 115J on that basis. The AO recomputed the book profits by adopting the depreciation rates as per Schedule XIV to the Companies Act as those were lower than the income-tax rates.

Ahead of Budget, an industry body has suggested government a slew of measures to boost industrial growth, including simplification of tax procedures, rationalisation of direct taxes and reduction in Minimum Alternative Tax (MAT). ‘Rationalisation in direct taxes is among the critical policy instruments with which government can help manufacturing sector consolidate its positions not only to mitigate the effects of global slowdown, but also to facilitate its transition to next level of growth,’ the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) said in statement .

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) convened a meeting of all cadre-Controlling Chief Commissioners of Income Tax here today to discuss strategies for achieving the revenue collection target budgeted at Rs.3,70,000 crore (Rs.3.7 trillion) and internally reset at Rs.4,00,000 crore (Rs.4 trillion). The meeting was addressed by the Member (Revenue) and the Chairman, CBDT. The Revenue Secretary also attended the meeting.
