The Sales Tax Bar Association, one of the most reputed and vibrant professional bar associations in the country comprising approximately 2,000 members, has taken a progressive step towards strengthening the legal and professional services ecosystem in India.

The Association has recently submitted a detailed representation before the Bar Council of India and the Ministry of Law and Justice seeking reconsideration and suitable amendments in the existing framework under the Advocates Act, 1961 and the relevant rules framed thereunder, so as to permit Advocates to enter into partnerships and collaborative professional arrangements with non-advocates.

The proposal advocates for recognition of Multi-Disciplinary Partnerships (MDPs) and allied collaborative professional structures on lines similar to the framework already prevailing under the regulations of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, Institute of Company Secretaries of India, and Institute of Cost Accountants of India.

In today’s rapidly evolving regulatory and commercial environment, clients increasingly seek integrated and holistic professional solutions under a single platform. Taxation, corporate law, compliance, accounting, insolvency, audit, valuation, and advisory functions often operate in close interdependence. The proposed framework would therefore facilitate better professional collaboration amongst Advocates, Chartered Accountants, Company Secretaries, Cost Accountants, and other professionals, thereby enabling efficient, coordinated, and client-centric services.

The Association, through its representation, has emphasized that permitting such collaborative structures would not dilute the independence or dignity of the legal profession; rather, it would modernize professional practice in tune with global standards and contemporary business realities. It would also provide clients with a convenient “one-stop professional solution” model while ensuring enhanced efficiency, accountability, and specialization.

The representation further highlights that similar collaborative models have already been successfully implemented by other professional institutes and that the legal profession may also be enabled to evolve within an appropriate regulatory framework safeguarding professional ethics and autonomy.

This initiative reflects the forward-looking vision of the Sales Tax Bar Association towards professional reforms, institutional development, and advancement of the larger legal and taxation fraternity.

Members are informed that a copy of the representation submitted before the authorities is attached herewith for their information and consideration.
