A credit rating estimates the credit worthiness of an individual, corporation, or even a country. It is an evaluation made by credit bureaus of a borrower’s overall credit history. A credit rating is also known as an evaluation of a potential borrower’s ability to repay debt, prepared by a credit bureau at the request of the lender. Credit ratings are calculated from financial history and current assets & liabilities. A credit rating tells a lender or investor the probability of the subject being able to pay back a loan.
Credit Information Bureau (India) Ltd (CIBIL) said it will come out with a database on mortgage defaulters and is also looking at expanding client base to telecom and insurance companies. “We will come up with a database of mortgage defaulters very soon,” CIBIL Managing Director, Mr Arun Thukral said after announcing the launch of a database of fraudulent activities here.

Mutual fund distributors are set to approach the capital market regulator, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), seeking a central bureau of registry for all ‘know your client’ (KYC) documentation. The distributors will also lobby for an electronic or digital KYC till a comprehensive system is put in place. They maintain that this would bring down the volume of paper in the system that would otherwise be generated if the distributors were to send a copy of all supporting documents to AMCs with retrospective effect.
