Buying and selling mutual funds units on the recently opened trading facility on stock exchanges will not be tax-free. While equity schemes would attract securities transaction tax, debt and liquid funds would face capital gains tax. Capital gains in respect of transfer of units of ‘equity-oriented mutual fund’ held for a period of more than 12 months (long-term) would not be liable to income tax provided the transfer of unit is subject to STT. If the units are held for 12 months or less (short-term), the same would be liable to tax at the rate of 15% plus cess.
Less than a week after the National Stock Exchange launched its mutual funds (MF) transaction platform, Asia’s oldest bourse, the Bombay Stock Exchange, today made operational its own MF platform for all investors.
Investors will be able to transact in mutual funds units through the National Stock Exchange (NSE) from Monday. UTI Mutual Fund will be the first fund house to use the NSE’s mutual fund platform, which would enable exchange’s members to use its existing infrastructure for transaction in MF schemes.
While RBI played down the issue, it emerged that Bank of Baroda (BoB) had an exposure of around $200 million (Rs 928 crore at Friday’s rates) to Dubai World, a senior bank executive said. “The amount is due for repayment only after 2011. It is paying interest and there are no overdues. So, we have absolutely no immediate concern,” a senior bank executive said.
