Income Tax Department has started sending emails to those users who have registered Email address with it and whose email address or Mobile Number is associated with more than 10 Income Tax Accounts.  Department has requested all such Taxpayers to Update their Email and Mobile Number on Income Tax E-Filing Website.  With Email it also sends List of users Registered with  common email ID and common Mobile number.  The Format of one such email is as follows :-

Dear Taxpayer(s),

This email ID has been registered as a primary contact by more than the permitted number of users on the E-filing website of the Income Tax Department. Therefore, taxpayer personal email ID (other than the one presently registered) may be used to update their contact details on the e-Filing portal. Similarly, if the Mobile number registered with e-filing account is also more than the permitted number of users then the Mobile Number should also be updated with taxpayer personal mobile Number.

Validation of email and mobile numbers has been introduced to facilitate taxpayers as in many cases incorrect emails and mobile numbers have been provided and taxpayers did not receive important communication from the Department. Further, it has been observed that in many cases taxpayers are not able to reset their password since the new temporary password from the Department may be sent to their registered email which may be different from the taxpayer’s personal email, e.g. email of their intermediary.

The Department will send separate One Time Passwords (OTP) also referred as PIN on the mobile and email provided by the taxpayer. The OTPs have to be entered by the taxpayer after logging into their e-filing account to authenticate the same. The OTPs will remain valid for 24 hours within which the taxpayer has to complete the process. For ‘Foreign/ NRI’ taxpayers, the OTP validation of the email ID would be sufficient.

This is a one-time process to validate the mobile number and email ID. However, whenever the taxpayer changes the Mobile Number or email ID in their Profile, the process will be repeated to ensure that the particulars provided are correct. Further, this validation will ensure that Department can send an OTP for resetting the password used for Login in case the taxpayer has forgotten the password.

Taxpayer may enter the email of any other person designated by him, in addition, as a Secondary Contact (without any restriction on the number of user accounts linked as a Secondary Contact) to also receive emails, alerts etc.

The Department requests your cooperation for completing this validation process at the earliest for a smooth and convenient return filing process.

List of the user ids which have this common email ID and common Mobile number are attached for reference. User ids are masked for security reasons. The email and mobile number for these user ids may be immediately updated and validated

I got an email saying: Validate contact details after receiving 2 PINS ( from email and mobile)

  5. ashfaque ahmad says:

IT DEPT SHOULD NOT DO LIKE THIS. INSTEAD THEY SHOULD MAIL THE LETTERS TO THE CLIENT AS WELL AS STP ITP CA ETC WHICH SHOULD BOTH ASSESSEE AND CA WILL KNOW THE TAX NOTICE. MOST OF THE ASSSSEES ARE ILLETERATE AND DO KNOW COMPUTER OPERATIONS. HENCE IT WILL INCREASE WORK LOAD TO THE TAX PRACTIONERS UNNECESSARILY.

  6. Murali says:

The Department first of all delayed in releasing the Income Tax Forms. And at the last minute, they started this process of updation of Contact details, which they could have planned and implemented long time ago and need not wait for the release of the forms.

Many times, we request for the PIN numbers. In many cases, PIN numbers are not received. If at all received, it will receive after few hours.

Sometimes, PIN number is received only to email and not to mobile and sometimes vice-versa. The department is doing injustice to the time of consultants and professionals.

When they start a process, they should check properly when their systems can handle the load. Otherwise, they should not have started this process. This is the height of bureaucracy.

The step taken by IT Dept to register the tax payer’s mobile number and email address with the IT Dept.
I welcome this transparency and a step in progress and direct link to the tax payer.

  8. Nitin Garg, Tax Consultant says:

It is not possible for Tax practioners to update current e Mail ID and Mobile numbers of all client’s.
I think This would Harass to Tax practitioner & Tax Payer’s also for visiting to Tax consultant’s office again & again. Resulting this, Department will loose large number of small taxpayers.

  9. Sadashiv R Gaikwad Tax Consultants says:

It is not possible for Tax practitioners to collect  valid, functional, current e Mail ID and Mobile numbers of all client’s.
Even senior citizen person not knowledge about e Mail and SMS reading.
Many clients are not well contact with CA or Tax practitioners when they need.
ITD should give bulk email facility for return filers.

  10. Pithadia says:

Income Tax department should have allowed the Advocate, CA, CS, ITP and other bukl return filer to use the Same Email ID and Same Mobile No. Departments argument saying incorrect Email ID and Incorrect Mobile No. Given by  Assessee has no force. CA, CS, ITP advocate could not make such mistakes.

  11. MANDEEP SINGH says:

    Sir,
it is difficult to covey each assessee for update contact details. It is not easy task to update contact details, if any professional have assessees more than 1000. It is my request to department in next two years automatic update all contact details. Please give time to ADVOCATES,TRP, CA’s, CMA, CS & ITP for it.
It is my also suggestion to department please update secondary email id as TAX ADVOCATE, CA, CS, TRP, CMA & ITP to exact strength of particular professionals.

  12. Ca. Nitin Bharadwaj says:

The mail sent is totally useless. Even I received it. The user id’s are masked .
How will we know which user id requires a new email id ?
They comply with their LEGAL COMPLIANCE , that ” sent  email ” now we can create more useless correspondence.
Bureaucrats are finding new techniques to harass common people.
