Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee is set to present his sixth national budget Monday, with people hoping for measures that will help them brave high prices and industry expecting steps that would spur demand and reduce tax burden .
The government is through with the consultation process on the proposed direct taxes code and the contours of the new tax structure could be finalised soon, a top government official said on Wednesday. The process of consultation is almost complete,” finance secretary Ashok Chawala told reporters on the sidelines of a Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry seminar in New Delhi.
Salaried employees may burn a hole in their pockets with the Government all set to impose tax on all perks –residential accommodation, conveyance and others — paid for by the company, under a new law that replaces the already abolished Fringe Benefit Tax. Perquisites given by the employer such as residential accommodation, conveyance facility and other benefits to the family of the employee could soon be added to their salary for income tax purposes and the Government may come out with a notification soon on the valuation of these perks.
Industry body Assocham today asked the government to raise the tax exemption limit on personal income from Rs 1.6 lakh per annum to Rs 4 lakh per annum and for senior citizens up to Rs 5 lakh per annum. The industry body was giving its proposals on the draft direct taxes code which has been put in public domain by the government for comments.
