Sensex is calculated using the Free-float Market Capitalization methodology. As per this methodology, the level of index at any point of time reflects the Free-float market value of 30 component stocks relative to a base period. The market capitalization of a company is determined by multiplying the price of its stock by the number of shares issued by the company. This market capitalization is further multiplied by the free-float factor to determine the free-float market Capitalization.

Circuit Filter/Circuit Breaker is the band that set upper and lower limit within which stock / Sensex can fluctuate on any particular day. These filters restrict extreme price movement and curb price manipulation to some extent by stock operators. Circuit Filter also protects investors from extreme price fluctuation.
The revenue department is opposed to abolition of Securities Transaction Tax (STT) as the levy helps keep a tab on investments in markets and track flow of unaccounted funds. STT helps in overall regulation and keep a check on cost involved. The stock exchanges have been asking the Finance Ministry to abolish STT arguing that such a step would help in boosting investments in stock markets and promote equity culture in the country.

Futures Trading in Commodity is a natural outgrowth of the problems of maintaining and managing supply of Agricultural Products and other commodities. It has a very long history in today’s world, the first exchange “The Chicago Board of Trade” (CBOT) was established in 1848 for trading in commodity futures. In 1880 and 1890 the New York Coffee, Cotton and Product Exchanges became operative.
Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) have been in existence in India for quite some time now. But so far ETFs have not enjoyed the kind of popularity that the conventional Mutual Funds enjoy. One reason could be the lack of understanding of the concept of ETF amongst the general investor. Second, and probably the more important reason, is that ETFs by nature track a certain index (e.g. Nifty or the Bankex).
In simple terms, Arbitrage is a system, or concept, that has been around for hundred of years, but there is still no any perfect definition of what it is. Your stock broker may give you one definition, while a commodities broker may tell you it’s something else. Hence, most investors have no clue what it’s about.
