Finance Minister Shri Pranab Mukherjee has asked the Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) to bring their Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) below 5% by this year itself. Finance Minister also announced the wage revision of the pay-scale and allowances of the employees of the RRBs corresponding to those of Nationalised Banks as per 9th Bipartite Settlement. The additional cost burden of the arrears on this account would be about Rs. 791 crores.

As for specific issues, let me begin with the issue of exemption threshold under GST. In this regard, it was the suggestion of the Empowered Committee that the Centre should consider retaining the exemption threshold of Rs.1.5 crore (presently available under Central Excise) for goods while the CGST threshold for services and the SGST threshold for both goods and services would be Rs.10 lakh. It is fundamental to a dual GST that every transaction constituting a supply of goods and services receive similar treatment under CGST and SGST.

Inflation-hit Delhiites can breathe a little easy with Delhi Government today slashing the value added tax (VAT) on diesel to 12.5 per cent from the existing 20 per cent which would bring down the fuel prices by Rs 2.70 per litre to Rs 37.50 per litre in the city.
A public competition was held amongst resident Indian citizens inviting entries for the symbol, which reflects and captures the Indian ethos and culture. Over 3000 entries were received, which were evaluated by a Jury headed by the Deputy Governor, RBI, which also included experts from three reputed art and design Institutes. The entries were presented to the Jury in such a manner that identity of the competitors was not revealed to the Jury members. The Jury selected five final entries and also gave its evaluation of these five entries to the Government to take a final decision.
From now on, the price of petrol will be revised once a month. However, there will be no immediate change in its price. Such a decision was on the cards ever since the oil ministry decided, on June 25, to deregulate the petrol price.
