India gives primacy to engagements in multi-lateral negotiations at the World Trade Organization. India is committed to successful conclusion of Doha Round and support multi-lateral and bilateral engagement with rest of the world”. He stressed that developed world is resorting to protectionist tendencies which hurt both developed and developing economies. The Minister informed, “In our lifetimes, we have seen a tectonic shift in global growth and investment patterns and while Europe and Americas dominated the economic discourse in the centuries we left behind, the 21st century is decidedly a different one in which emerging economies of Asia, Africa and Latin America are playing a much larger role. The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Minister said enough schemes are there for micro and small industries, but there is no particular scheme for medium ones.

The government today said the total tax collections-both direct and indirect-for 2010-11 have exceeded even the revised estimate on the back of strong economic activities. “I am reasonably sure that we will cross Rs 4.50 lakh crore in direct taxes…I am reasonably confident that it (indirect tax) will be around Rs 3.43 lakh crore-Rs 3.44 lakh crore,” Revenue Secretary Sunil Mitra told reporters on the sidelines of an IPPAI conference.

The CBI today registered the ninth case in its probe of alleged corruption during Commonwealth Games naming seven senior engineers of CPWD and DDA for allegedly inflating cost of laying of synthetic turf as it carried out searches at 20 locations across the NCR. Besides these officials, a sports equipment providing company Jubilee Sports Private Limited which had got the contract for laying of synthetic turf for Lawn Bowl event during the Games has also been named in the case, official sources said.
The Union Government on Tuesday objected in the Supreme Court to the CBI’s decision to appoint senior advocate U. U. Lalit as special public prosecutor for the trial of former Telecom Minister A. Raja and other accused in the 2G spectrum allocation case. Attorney General G. E. Vahanvati told a Bench of Justices G. S. Singhvi and A. K. Ganguly that under the provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act, the special prosecutor has to be working under the State or the Union government for at least seven years.

The Delhi government on Monday decided to impose a blanket ban on the manufacture, storage and use of plastic bags in the city. The Delhi Cabinet presided by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit took the decision and directed all the concerned authorities like MCD, NDMC and Environment Department to implement the decision.
