RBI has increased cash reserve ratio by 75 bps to 5.75 Percent , the hike would happen in two stages, the first stage of hike of 50 bps will be effective from February 13 and the next 25 bps from February 27. RBI has not touched the the reverse repo rate which is at 3.25 percent and repo rate which is at 4.75 percent. CRR hike would suck out Rs 36,000 crore liquidity from the system.
On the basis of the current macroeconomic assessment, as set out in the Third Quarter Review of Monetary Policy 2009-10 issued on January 29, 2010, it has been decided to increase the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) for Scheduled Commercial Banks by 75 basis points from 5.00 per cent to 5.75 per cent of their net demand and time liabilities (NDTL) in two stages, effective the fortnights as indicated below:
Interest rates may remain soft even if the central bank were to withdraw its accommodating stance and tighten monetary policy, which will be reviewed on Friday. The good news for home loan borrowers is that retail loans are the only form of credit showing some decent growth and bankers are unlikely to jeopardise this demand by raising rates. Corporates, who in any case have not been big borrowers, may also not see an increase in rates as banks have said they are unlikely to increase their benchmark lending rates this fiscal.
Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) has concluded an Agreement dated May 28, 2009 with the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania making available to the latter, a Line of Credit (LOC) of USD 40 million (USD forty million only) for financing eligible goods and services including consultancy services from India for the purpose of financing export of tractors, pumps and equipments.
The External Commercial Borrowing (ECB) policy is regularly reviewed by the Government in consultation with Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to keep it in tune with the evolving macroeconomic situation, changing market conditions, sectoral requirements, the external sector and lessons of experience. Consequent upon such a review and in order to develop the telecom sector in the country, the Government had earlier permitted eligible borrowers in the telecommunication sector to avail of ECB for the purpose of payment for Spectrum allocation.
Ahead of the Reserve Bank’s quarterly monetary policy, RBI is likely to signal interest rate hikes to suck out liquidity from the market and check prices from spiraling further. Reserve Bank may also raise the amount banks need to park with the apex bank (CRR) by up to 50 basis points. Reserve Bank could raise the short-term borrowing (reverse repo) rate by 25 basis points. Reserve bank is likely to hike cash reverse ratio by up to 50 basis points.
Please find enclosed a copy of the corrigendum received from Government of India (Ministry of External Affairs) as forwarded by the Chairman of UN Security Council’s 1267 Committee regarding a technical error in the Arabic script of one of names referred to in the note dated January 19, 2010 {Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula ( AQAP) (QE.A.129.10)} for information and necessary action.
As per the extant policy, eligible borrowers in the telecommunication sector are permitted to avail of ECB for the purpose of payment for spectrum allocation, under the automatic route. Keeping in view the large outlay of funds required to be paid directly to the Government within a limited period of time, it has been decided to make a one-time relaxation in the end-use conditions of the ECB policy.
ATM transactions may have become free for customers, but banks now have to pay Re 1 for every ATM transaction that is routed through the National Financial Switch — the backbone of ATM networks in the country. The charge has been introduced after RBI transferred ownership of NFS from its technology arm IDRBT to the newly-formed National Payments Corporation.
