Ministry of Finance,

Subject: Request for Extension of Income Tax Return Verification Date

Respected Madam,

We, on behalf of the Advocates’ Tax Bar Association, would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for your diligent efforts toward the betterment of our nation’s economy and taxation system. As representatives of a prominent body of tax professionals, we are writing to bring an important matter to your attention regarding the Income Tax Return verification process.

First and foremost, we would like to acknowledge the government’s ongoing initiatives to simplify and streamline tax compliance procedures. These steps have certainly reduced the burden on taxpayers and facilitated efficient tax filing processes.

However, we have noticed that the current verification period of 30 days for filing Income Tax Returns is proving to be inadequate for a significant number of taxpayers. This short duration often leads to undue stress and hardships for individuals, especially in cases where they encounter delays due to various genuine reasons, including administrative constraints and other external factors beyond their control.

In light of this, we kindly request the government to consider extending the ITR verification period from the existing 30 days to a more reasonable duration of 90 days. This extension will allow taxpayers ample time to complete the verification process without unnecessary pressures and penalties.

Additionally, we propose an alternative solution to mitigate the impact of a shortened verification period. If a 90-day extension is not feasible, we earnestly request that the government introduces a consolation period of 60 days beyond the initial 30 days. This approach will provide taxpayers with a total of 90 days to complete the ITR verification process, striking a balance between the need for compliance and the realities of practical challenges.

We firmly believe that such an extension will not only ease the burden on taxpayers but will also encourage more individuals to come forward and fulfill their tax obligations responsibly and in a timely manner. Furthermore, this measure aligns with the government’s vision of promoting a taxpayer-friendly environment, fostering trust and compliance.

We understand that the Ministry of Finance is consistently working towards the welfare of the nation and its citizens. Therefore, we humbly request you to consider our proposal and take the necessary steps to implement an extended verification period for Income Tax Returns. We are confident that your prudent decision in this regard will be well-received and appreciated by taxpayers across the country.

Thank you for considering our request, and we remain hopeful for a positive outcome. We look forward to your continued support in creating a more efficient and effective tax system for the benefit of all stakeholders.

Yours sincerely,

Om Kumar
National General Secretary
