Q.1 What is EVC?

Ans. Ans. An Electronic Verification code (EVC) is a 10-digit alphanumeric code which is sent on your registered mobile to verify an item electronically, login to the e-Filing portal or used to reset password. You can use the EVC to verify an item electronically (e-Verify statutory forms, e-Verify Income Tax Returns, e-Verify Refund re-issue request, response against any notice), login to e-filing portal or reset password.

Q. 2 Can I generate EVC for someone else or can anybody else generate EVC on my behalf?

Ans. An Individual taxpayer can generate EVC for self and also some other PAN (except Company) or TAN in case the individual is Principal Contact of the particular Entity. Individual taxpayer can also generate EVC for some other PAN user in case he is authorized as the representative for the particular PAN.

Q. 3 Can a company verify their returns through EVC?

Ans. No. A company cannot verify their returns by generating EVC. They will have to verify their returns through DSC.

Q.4 Is it mandatory to link my PAN with the account I am trying to generate EVC?

Ans. Yes, it is mandatory to link your PAN with whichever account you are using to generate EVC.
In case you are generating EVC using validated bank account, through net banking or Bank ATM, you will have to link your PAN with the same bank account.

In case you are generating EVC using demat account, you will have to link your PAN with the same demat account.

Q.5  What is the validity of the generated EVC?

Ans. The EVC generated will be valid for 72 hours from the time of generation.

Q.6 Can I use the same EVC within 72 hours multiple times to e-verify different returns?

Ans. No, you can not use the same EVC to e-verify different returns. You will have to generate a new EVC for every item you wish to verify electronically.

Q.7  I have verified my return using EVC, do I still need to send the physical ITR V to CPC Bangalore? 

Ans. No. Once you have e-Verified your return using EVC, you are not required to send the physical copy of the ITR V to CPC Bangalore.

Q.8  I want to use my bank account to generate an EVC. Can I use any bank account or only the one which is linked with the e-Filing portal?

Ans. You can only generate the EVC with the Bank account which is linked and validated with the e-Filing portal.

Q.9  Can I verify my earlier filed returns which are pending for verification?

Ans. Yes, if the time limit for verification has not expired or the delay has been condoned by the competent Income Tax Authority.

Q.10 How can I generate EVC through Bank ATM option?

Ans. To generate EVC through Bank ATM option, you must have your PAN linked with the respective bank account and the same PAN should be registered with the e-Filing portal. Once it is linked, you can swipe/insert your debit card at the ATM and select the option with “PIN for Income Tax Filing”. The EVC will be sent to your mobile number and the email ID registered on the e-Filing portal.

Q.11 Which banks allow me to generate EVC through Bank Account?

Ans. You can generate EVC through any of the following banks which are linked and validated with the e-Filing portal:

  • Allahabad Bank
  • Andhra Bank
  • Bank of Baroda
  • Canara Bank
  • Central Bank of India
  • Federal Bank
  • HDFC Bank
  • ICICI Bank
  • IDBI Bank
  • Karur Vysya Bank

Q.12 Do I need to pre-validate my Bank account or my Demat account before generating an EVC using my bank account or Demat account?

Ans. Yes, you are required to pre-validate your Bank account or your Demat account before generating an EVC.

Manual on Income Tax Electronic Verification code (EVC) 

1. Overview

The Generate Electronic Verification Code (EVC) service is only available to individual registered users of the e-Filing portal to Generate EVC. This service allows you to:

  • e-Verify an item (Statutory forms, Income Tax Returns, refund reissue request and response against any notice)
  • Login to e-Filing portal
  • Reset password

2. Prerequisites to Avail This Service

  • Registered user on e-Filing portal as Individual Taxpayer with valid user ID and password
  • Validated and EVC enabled bank account in the e-Filing portal (For Bank Account option)
  • Validated and EVC enabled demat account in the e-Filing portal (For Demat Account option)
  • PAN linked with bank account (For Net banking option)
  • Valid debit card (For Bank ATM option)
  • Respective bank account should be linked with PAN and same PAN should be registered at e-Filing (For Bank ATM option)

3. Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Log in to the e-Filing portal using your user ID and password.

Step 2: On your Dashboard, click Services > Generate EVC.

4.1 Generating EVC through Net Banking

Step 1: On the Generate EVC page, select Through Net Banking and click Continue.

Step 2: On the e-Filing login Through Net Banking page, select the Bank Name.

Note: You will be logged out of the e-Filing portal when your bank’s Net Banking login page appears.

Step 3: On your bank’s Net Banking Login page, enter your Username as provided by your bank and Password.

Step 4: On your Net Banking website, click on the link to log in to the e-Filing portal.

Note: You will be logged out of your Net Banking website and logged in to your e-Filing account.

Step 5: On your Dashboard, click Services > Generate EVC.

4.2. Generating EVC through Bank Account

Step 1: On the Generate EVC page, select Through Bank Account and click Continue.

A success message will be displayed, and you will receive the EVC on your mobile number and email ID verified by the bank.

Note:

  • EVC through Bank Account option can be generated only if the bank account added is validated and EVC enabled.
  • You will receive the EVC on your mobile number or your email ID only if and verified by the bank.

4.3. Generating EVC through Demat Account

Step 1: On the Generate EVC page, select Through Demat Account and click Continue.

A success message will be displayed, and you will receive the EVC on your mobile number and email ID verified by NSDL / CSDL.

Note:

  • EVC through Demat Account option can be generated only if the demat account added is validated and EVC enabled.
  • You will receive the EVC on your mobile number or your email ID only if they are verified by NSDL/CSDL.

4.4. Generating EVC through Bank ATM option (Offline method)

Step 1: Visit your nearest bank ATM and swipe your debit card.

Step 2: Enter PIN.

Step 3: Select Generate EVC for Income tax Filing.

An EVC will be sent to your mobile number and email ID registered with the e-Filing portal.

Note: 

  • You must have linked the PAN with your respective bank account and the same PAN should be registered with e-Filing portal.
  • List of Banks through which you can generate EVC through Bank ATM option – Axis Bank Ltd, Canara Bank, Central Bank of India, ICICI Bank, IDBI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and State Bank of India.

    notification in portal “EVC generated and sent” received but no EVC received either on email or phone(SMS) even for 2 hours. what to do?
