The Government of India has proposed a new initiative, PAN 2.0, aimed at overhauling and modernizing the Permanent Account Number (PAN) system. The project will be implemented through a Managed Service Provider (MSP), though the MSP is yet to be finalized. Once onboarded, the timeline for the project’s implementation is 18 months. PAN 2.0 is designed to improve service quality, accelerate delivery, and enhance grievance redressal by integrating advanced technologies. The project intends to streamline various PAN and TAN-related services such as allotment, corrections, Aadhaar-PAN linking, re-issuance, and online validation into a single digital platform. This will function as a comprehensive, one-stop solution for users. As of now, there are over 81.24 crore PAN holders in the country, with Uttar Pradesh (11.45 crore), Maharashtra (9.34 crore), and West Bengal (6.58 crore) among the states with the highest PAN registrations. The initiative is expected to significantly enhance user experience by offering faster and more efficient handling of PAN/TAN matters while reducing procedural complexities.
