The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a legal authority that offers a food license to all food business operators (FBO) in India.
All the FBOs must follow all the rules and regulations of FSSAI for food quality control.
WHAT IS IT?
All the manufacturers, traders, restaurants, grocery shops, importers and exporters, etc are eligible for issuing FSSAI Licence.
WHY IT IS REQUIRED?

FSSAI Registration ensures the security of food products and it is essentially a food safety certificate circulated by the food authority in India. FSSAI Licensing assures that food products undergo specific quality checks, thereby decreasing the cases of adulteration, substandard and unrefined products.l
BY WHOM IT IS REQUIRED?
In simple language, by everyone who is directly or indirectly related with food products it includes a roadside hawker as well as a 5 star hotel, a grocery shop owner as well as a dhaba owner, Thus it means if food business comes to your mind, FSSAI License should comes first.
TYPES OF FSSAI LICENSE
There are three types of FSSAI License
- BASIC REGISTRATION
The FSSAI registration is for food business operators (FBOs) which have small-sized business or start-ups. They have their annual turnover less than Rs.12 Lakh per annum.
FORM: FORM A
- STATE LICENSE
The State FSSAI License is for the FBOs which have medium- size business. They have their annual turnover more than Rs. 12 Lakhs or up to Rs.20 crores.
FORM: FORM B
- CENTRAL LICENSE
The Central FSSAI License is applicable for FBOs which have large business annual turnover i.e. above Rs.20 crores. It is also required in cases where you need to supply at the government offices or import / export food products, Hotels 5 Star and above, Food catering services in Defence Locations,warehouse storage.
FORM: FORM B
The eligibility for dairy units, slaughtering units and all other food processing units depends upon production capacity.

HOW TO GET FSSAI LICENSE?
STEP 1: Fill FSSAI Licensing Registration Form i.e. FORM A and make the payment
STEP 2: After payment confirmation, FORM B has to be submitted along with required documents.
STEP 3: Follow-up with the Department for an update and correct if any discrepancy is left in the application or the documents.

OTHER DOCUMENTS CAN BE REQUIRED DEPENDING UPON THE TYPE OF FOOD BUSINESS.
Similarly, there will be different documents in case of conversion, renewal or modification of License.
VALIDITY OF LICENSE
One to Five Years
RENEWAL OF LICENSE
The food license allotted has a validity of one year and can be increased to a maximum of 5 years by the food regulatory body. The moment license validity gets expired the food business operator becomes liable for FSSAI LICENSE RENEWAL.Fssai has allotted the guideline that in 30 days and before the expiry of the licence the food safety registration has to get renewed.
IMPORTANT NOTE AND UPDATE
1. FSSAI has launched Food Safety Compliance System in the States/UTs of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Gujarat, Goa, Odisha, Manipur, Delhi, Chandigarh and Ladakh with effect from 1st June 2020. This system replaces the existing online Food Licensing and Registration System (FLRS- https://foodlicensing.fssai.gov.in) Users of these States/UTs are now required to visit https://foscos.fssai.gov.in and login through same user ids and passwords.
2. Food Business Operators having License/Registration of premises at Indian Railwaysand concerned Authorities will continue to operate at Food Licensing and Registration System (FLRS) till further announcement.
