For some, silence in the library is necessary, but for others, the hustle and bustle of a coffee shop may be just the right amount of background noise to focus on.
Create a learning ritual:
When it is about staying focused on your learning or studying, it’s important to create a routine that will help you find your flow and focus. A good place to start is with a ritual that includes things like tidying your desk, closing the door, bringing all the gear you need, plugging in headphones, and making a to-do list. Taking five minutes to customize your workspace not only prepares you physically for studying it also trains your brain to shift focus more easily. With the space around you free from distractions, you can focus on what matters most.
Block distracting tech apps from the phone, tablet and laptop:
Website and app distractions can destroy any productive, focused study session. You start studying, and before you can even begin, you find a clue or title that catches your eye. At first glance, a small annoyance like this can quickly steal minutes and then hours. It takes an average of 23 minutes to focus on your work after a break.
Divide up the study sessions:
When preparing for the exam, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the amount of information to study. Most of the stress associated with studying results from poor planning and time management that led to stress the night before.
Research has shown that dividing your workout into multiple distance sessions greatly improves retention over time. While punching may work for the next day’s test, the information will likely be forgotten soon after. It’s also much easier to stay focused for 30 minutes straight than for an eight-hour session.
Use the Pomodoro technique:
The Pomodoro technique is ideal for dividing your training sessions into manageable periods. It’s easy – choose a task to do, set a timer, do it when the doorbell rings, then take a break.
Only you can decide which timeframe is best for you, but in general, the Pomodoro Technique requires you to work on a single task for 25 minutes, completely continuously. After the timer goes off, rest for three to five minutes. Then cycle three more times before taking a 25-30 minute break. This will help prevent burnout and keep you focused and motivated to complete tasks.
Studies show that not only the body but also the brain benefits from regular exercise. Studies show that you can increase your focus for up to two or three hours with short-term exercise by boosting brain blood flow. Exercising daily has also shown great results in improving mood and sleep and lowering stress and anxiety – all of which can affect cognitive function. In the long term, exercise has been shown to lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and slow the ageing process in the brain
To experience the benefits of exercise, researchers recommend 30 minutes of moderate activity, or a total of 150 minutes, most days of the week.
After all, there is no quick and easy way to stay focused while studying. Other methods and tools work better for some than others. However, with a little trial and error and the tools and techniques mentioned above, you can create a focused study routine that works best for you.
