After analysis what I found that beside my course subject and articleship I mainly discuss about movies, cricket, football, about girls and so on. And I think same might be the case in all of you friend. Recently I completed GMCS-I program of ICAI and I came to know that all these are a bit useless and non-value adding to our personal and professional life.  I request you people to involve in value adding activities rather than these activities because it will definitely help in our forthcoming life.

Now comes what are value adding activities. These are the activities that generate a positive return. I am writing only about few activities that we should take care of which are as follow:

  • Communication Skill
  • English Language
  • Time Management

1.  Communication Skill

We after becoming CA, CS, CMA will have to interact with our client or boss who can be the executive member of reputed companies. At present I have seen that many friends are using so many vulgar words and their sentences are worthless so we should develop our communication skill. Communication represents what we speak and how we speak.

What we speak– The words have so power and it denotes your nature. There is one saying that “Banduk Se Nikla Goli Aaur Muh Se Nikla Boli Kabhi Bapas Nahi Aayega”. So before saying we should think. To know what we speak we should increase our knowledge and vocabulary by reading books, newspaper, magazine, listening podcast etc.

How we speak-It is said that it matters more how you speak than what you speak. So proper care should have to be given in body language, voice quality etc. To increase this thing we can see the great person interviews.

2.  English Language

English is called International Language. We can communicate with the citizens of most of countries in this globe without any confusion by English so it has great importance. It has become the essential in our professional life. For increasing it we can create English speaking environment in our room, flat or hostel. As this staying with friend may not be possible later on so we should try as soon as possible. English can’t be increased without practice so practice, practice, and practice.

3.  Time Management

Time management is one biggest concern to us. By managing time we can involve in activities, especially to increase effectiveness, efficiency or productivity. So, how to manage time? Firstly we have to made ABC analysis of our activities. Those work having importance should be categorized as A, the medium importance work to be categorized as B and the least importance as C. After categorizing we have to give priority as per their importance.

I have mentioned only few concerns, there are so many others. So friend overall what I want to say is just ask question on yourself whether you are perfect at present or not. If not then apply these or others activities for value adding on you.

I am definitely of the opinion that a major portion of the blame for poor pass percentage lies with the present day students. We have 26 articled trainees with us and except for one or two, I have found the following disturbing features among all:

    1. Poor English and communication skills

    2. Reluctance to use proper and full English sentences while preparing audit queries and notes and instead use abbreviated sentences in SMS language.

    3. An excessive dependence on computer that has created a Cut, Copy and Paste culture for writing with the result that they fail to develop the required ability and speed to convert their thoughts into writing. This is a crippling factor especially considering that inside the examination hall, they have only three hours to attempt all questions. Thus even if they know the answers they don’t find the most appropriate words and phrases quickly to express their ideas.

    4. Reluctance (I have seen some students almost having a contempt) to use the Study Materials provided by the Institute and instead depend on bulky text-books. They end up wasting time reading unnecessary things.

    5. A blind belief that if they don’t attend some swanky tutorial academy, they would not be able to clear the exams. For this Tuition Culture I squarely blame some of our own members who run these tutorial classes and fleece the students. The result is that the students are more interested in attending all kinds of classes rather than getting practical exposure during their articleship.
