In an environment of growing integration among the financial markets, volatility in the exchange rate of a currency could not only be attributed to domestic macroeconomic and global factors but also attributed to spillover effects emanating from other volatile markets due to market microstructure in terms of differences in timing of trading activity, bid-ask spreads and risk perceptions. In this context, this paper analyses volatility spillovers from the exchange rates of the Brazilian Real, the Russian Ruble, the South Korean Won, the Singapore Dollar, the Japanese Yen, the Swiss Franc, the British Pound Sterling and the Euro to the exchange rate of the Indian Rupee during 2005-11.

Reserve Bank, vide it’s circular No.FMD.MSRG.No.67/02.05.002/2011-12 dated March 9, 2012, had advised that all inter-bank OTC foreign exchange derivatives transactions should be reported on a platform to be developed by the CCIL. The CCIL has since completed development of the platform for reporting of USD-INR forwards, FX swaps and FCY-INR options. It has been decided that the platform should be operationalised with effect from July 9, 2012. The salient features of the reporting requirement are as under.

Attention of the Authorised Dealer (AD) Category – I banks is invited to A. P. (DIR Series) Circular No.45 dated March 15, 2011 wherein, it was, inter-alia, stipulated that the annual return on Foreign Liabilities and Assets (FLA) is required to be submitted directly by all the Indian companies which have received FDI and/or made FDI abroad (i.e. overseas investment) in the previous year(s) including the current year, to the Director, External Liabilities and Assets Statistics Division, Department of Statistics and Information Management (DSIM), Reserve Bank of India, C-8, 3rd floor, Bandra Kurla Complex, Bandra (E), Mumbai – 400 051, by July 15 of every year.
The Reserve Bank of India, today released on its website, the final guidelines on “White Label Automated Teller Machines (WLAs) in India”. White Label ATMs are ATMs set up, owned and operated by non-bank entities incorporated in India under the Companies Act, 1956. Till now, only banks were permitted to set up Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) as extended delivery channels.

The HLSC was mandated to suggest measures for making the supervisory processes for commercial banks more effective and useful to the supervised entities as well. The terms of reference for the Committee included a mandate for reviewing the extant approach, methodology, processes/tools for onsite and off-site supervision, supervisory rating and stress testing frameworks and recommending measures for a gradual progression to a risk based supervision framework. The Committee has since submitted its Report to the Governor on June 11, 2012.
