The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has notified the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Amendment Rules, 2026, under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009. The amendment inserts sub-rule (10A) in Rule 6 of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011. Effective from 1 July 2026, the new provision mandates that every e-commerce entity selling imported products must provide product listings in a searchable and sortable filter clearly specifying the country of origin. The objective is to enhance transparency and enable consumers to make informed purchasing decisions when buying imported goods online. The notification clarifies that the principal rules were originally published in 2011 and last amended in December 2025. With this amendment, digital marketplaces will be required to integrate functional filters that allow consumers to identify imported products based on their country of origin, thereby strengthening consumer awareness and regulatory compliance in online retail.
