The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) convened a meeting of all cadre-Controlling Chief Commissioners of Income Tax here today to discuss strategies for achieving the revenue collection target budgeted at Rs.3,70,000 crore (Rs.3.7 trillion) and internally reset at Rs.4,00,000 crore (Rs.4 trillion). The meeting was addressed by the Member (Revenue) and the Chairman, CBDT. The Revenue Secretary also attended the meeting.

The Income Tax department is giving special attention to tax deducted at source (TDS) as it aims to turn in the highest ever collection from the segment this financial year. During the last five years, the contribution from TDS had gone up from 33 per cent to 38.5 per cent of the net direct tax collection with an annual average growth of around 25 per cent.

Insurance companies, while settling third party insurance claims, cannot deduct tax at source (TDS) on the interest earned on the compensation amount, ruled Bombay high court. A division bench of justice Sharad Bobde and justice SJ Kathawalla, in an interim order, directed the New India Assurance Company not to deduct tax from the amount of interest to be paid over a compensation granted to a widow, her two children and her mother-in-law.

Finance minister made many changes in rules and section related to TDS in his Final budget presented in July 2009 which resulted in change in TDS rates which created confusion on applicability of surcharge and cess on TDS. It also created confusion about the date of applicability of 20% rate of TDS when PAN not given. In his Budget finance minister made most of the provisions applicable from 1st October 2009.
