B M Sharma new ICWAI prez, M Gopalakrishnan elected VP. The Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India (ICWAI) today said that B M Sharma has been elected as its president for the year 2010-2011. Sharma, who replaces G N Venkataraman, was earlier the vice president of the cost accounting regulator, it said in a statement.

The PD Committee in its meeting held on 10th June 2010 at Bangalore has approved in principle the “Draft of ICWAI Members’ Handbook-A guide to members in employment and practice”. It was decided by PD Committee to seek feedback/ suggestions from the members by 7th July 2010. After analyzing these suggestions the PD Directorate will incorporate the same before putting up to Council in its meeting to held in July 2010 for final approval before printing.
Regulations regarding maintenance of cost accounting records and cost audit are likely to change. If the recommendations of the expert committee appointed by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs are accepted, all manufacturing companies with a paid-up capital of Rs 50 crores (500 million) or more will be required to get their cost accounting records audited by a statutory cost auditor.
The expert group constituted by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs has specifically highlighted the need to develop cost accounting standards on the basis of generally accepted cost accounting principles. The cost accounting standards board is working to address the issue.

Apex cost accountants body ICWAI today said it will set up centres for filing returns and tax-related documents electronically. Under an agreement signed with Central Bureau of Excise and Customs (CBEC), the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India (ICWAI) will provide facilitation centres across the country for e-filing of returns and documents to the central excise and service tax assesses.
