Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) during the Month of April 2011 was 4.17 lakh as compared to FTAs of 3.54 lakh during the month of April 2010 and 3.48 lakh in April 2009. There has been a growth of 17.7 % in April 2011 over April 2010 as compared to a growth of 2 % registered in April 2010 over April 2009. FTAs during the period January-April 2011 were 21.54 lakh with a growth of 12.3 %, as compared to the FTAs of 19.18 lakh with a growth of 8.9 % during January-April 2010 over the corresponding period of 2009.

THE TARGET -The target is to double the country’s merchandise exports in dollar terms over the next three years (2011-12 to 2013-14) from US $ 246 billion in 2010-11 to US$ 500 billion in 2013-14. To realize this, exports have to grow at a compound average growth of 26.7 % per annum.

Civil aviation regulator DGCA today asked private airlines not to charge exorbitant spot ticket prices and ensure that these were not more than the maximum fares published on their website. The directive came at a meeting DGCA chief E K Bharat Bhushan held with senior officials of private airlines, following complaints that exorbitant spot-fares being charged by the carriers in the wake of cancellation of Air India flights due to the ongoing pilots’ strike.

Finance Minister Shri Mukherjee is visiting Hanoi in order to attend 44th Board of Governors’ Annual Meet of Asian Development Bank (ADB). Shri Mukherjee will leave tomorrow afternoon and will return on the night of 5th May, 2011. The Trade and Economic Relations Committee held its 17th meeting on the 29th April 2011 under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister. The committee reviewed the status of the India-European Union Bilateral Trade and Investment Agreement and discussed the various issues involved in the negotiations. It was observed that concern has been raised by various quarters about the Indian stand on issues on Intellectual Property Rights, especially in the context of the Indian Pharma products. The Prime Minister firmly directed that the Indian side shall not take on any obligation beyond TRIPS/ Domestic Law.

There have been a number of articles on the Cabinet Secretary’s report regarding tapping of telephones which appeared in some section of the media. It is important that the correct factual position is presented to the media. The provisions for authorization of interception are contained in Section 5(2) of Indian Telegraph Act, 1885 read with Rule 419(A) of the Indian Telegraph Rules, 1951 as well as Section 69 of the Information Technology Act, 2000 read with Information Technology (Directions for Interception or Monitoring or Decryption of Information) Rules, 2009.

Supreme Court bans employment of children in circuses

The Supreme Court today banned the employment of children in circuses and directed the government to rescue children employed in the sector and formulate a rehabilitation programme for them. A bench headed by Justice Dalveer Bhandari said that in order to protect the fundamental rights of children, it is imperative that the government issues notification to prohibit employment of children in this sector.
