Cheque transactions worth over Rs 7.97 lakh crore were carried out in the country during February, 2011, a growth of over 2.5 per cent from the same month last year.Banks had cleared cheques worth over Rs 7.77 lakh crore in February 2010, as per the latest data from the Reserve Bank.

Driven by increase in prices of food and manufactured goods, inflation soared to 8.98 per cent in March raising fears of yet another hike in key policy rates by the Reserve Bank next month.Headline inflation, measured by movement in wholesale prices, at near 9 per cent in March was much above the RBI”s projection of 8 per cent. As a result, experts feel the central bank may take further steps to tame rate of price rise at its annual policy to be announced on May 3.

RBI fixes reference rates for US dollar and euro

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today fixed the reference rate for the US dollar at Rs 44.52 per dollar and the euro at Rs 64.41 per euro, as against Rs 44.48 per dollar and Rs 64.42 per euro on April 13. In a press release issued by the RBI, the exchange rates for the pound and yen against the rupee were quoted at Rs 72.7167 per pound and Rs 53.48 per 100 yen, based on reference rates for the US dollar and cross-currency quotes at noon.

No. 2374/06.11.001/2010-2011 – In partial modification of the instructions contained therein, it is advised that the system audit may be conducted by a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and registered with Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) or by a holder of a Diploma in Information System Audit (DISA) qualification of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI).

RBI slaps fine of Rs 9 lakh on three cooperative banks for rules violation

The Reserve Bank has imposed penalties of Rs 9 lakh on three cooperative banks for violation of regulations and guidelines relating to anti-money laundering. Two of the banks, Ankola Urban Co-operative Bank and Kushtagi Pattana Sahakara Bank Niyanit, are based in Karnataka, while Salal Sarvoday Nagrik Sahakari Bank is a Gujarat-based lender, RBI said.

RBI launched its Industrial Outlook Survey for the April-June, 2011 period today. The survey gives an insight into the perception of non-financial public and private limited companies engaged in manufacturing activities about their performance and future prospects, a press release issued here stated. The assessment of business sentiments for the present quarter and expectations for the ensuing quarter are based on qualitative responses to 20 major parameters.

The Reserve Bank has imposed penalty of Rs 1 lakh each on two Gujarat-based cooperative sector lenders for violation of various rules, including anti-money laundering guidelines. The two banks are — the Surat-headquartered Rander People’s Co-operative Bank and Vadodara-based Shree Mahalaxmi Mercantile Co-operative Bank, the apex bank said yesterday.

RBI Circular on Compounding of interest on Agriculture Loans

RPCD.CO.RRB.BC No. 59/03.05.72/2010-11- A recent study undertaken by Regional Offices of NABARD and RBI in select States has revealed that compounding of interest on quarterly/ half-yearly basis, and not as per cropping/ harvesting cycle/s on agricultural loans, was prevalent in some RRBs. In certain cases, NABARD has also observed that RRBs have been using the software package developed by their sponsor banks, which has no provision for segregating interest from principal before applying the interest for the next period. Wherever manual accounting was involved, the compounding was observed in a few cases attributed to human error.

RPCD.CO.RRB.BC.No.59 /03.05.34 /2010-11 – On a review of the issue it has been decided that the exemption granted to RRBs up to financial year 2009-10 from ‘mark to market’ norms in respect of their investment in SLR securities be extended by for three years i.e. for the financial years 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13. Accordingly, RRBs will have the freedom to classify their entire investment portfolio of SLR securities under ‘Held to Maturity’ for the financial years 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 with valuation on book value basis and amortization of premium, if any, over the remaining life of securities
