The Reserve Bank of India today released its ‘Quarterly Statistics on Deposits and Credit of Scheduled Commercial Banks, December 2010’. The publication contains data relating to deposits and credit of scheduled commercial banks including regional rural banks (RRBs) as on last Friday of December 2010 (December 31, 2010). The data are based on Basic Statistical Return (BSR)-7 giving branch wise data, received from all scheduled commercial banks (including RRBs).

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today tightened the prudential norms for banks and raised provisioning requirement for bad loans by up to 10%, a development that would impact bottom lines of banks.
Reserve Bank on Wednesday asked public to exchange 25 paise coins and those with lower denominations with banks before June 30, the day from which they would be demonetised or cease to be a legal tender for payment.
Advances classified as sub-standard will attract a provision of 15 per cent as against the existing 10 per cent. The “unsecured exposures” classified as sub-standard assets will attract an additional provision of 10 per cent, i.e., a total of 25 per cent as against the existing 20 per cent. However, “unsecured exposures” in respect of Infrastructure loan accounts classified as sub-standard, in case of which certain safeguards such as escrow accounts are available as indicated in our circular DBOD.No.BP.BC.96/08.12.014/2009-10 dated April 23, 2010, will attract an additional provision of 5 per cent only i.e. a total of 20 per cent as against the existing 15 per cent.
