As a responsible taxpayer, e- tax payment can be made online to ensure timely and hassle free payments. But , I have been hearing multiple instances where the taxpayer is puzzled and finds himself in a difficult spot when they cannot find their bank available on the Income tax portal for making the e-payment.

Well there is a reason for this , as the Income tax portal allows only a selected banks who fits into their eligibility criteria to be listed on their portal , the same is updated on a timely basis for any additions/removals.

To remove confusions and questions about which banks are empanelled or authorised with the Income tax portal for paying e-taxes , I’m here with an updated list until November 2024.

How to Pay Income Tax Online: A Step-by-Step Guide

Paying taxes online is a simple and efficient process. You can either log in to the Income Tax e-Filing Portal or pay without logging in. Here’s a clear, step-by-step guide to help you navigate both methods.

Option 1: Pay After Logging into the Income tax e-Filing Portal

Login to the Portal: Visit Income Tax e-Filing Portal and log in with your PAN and password.

Select e-Pay Tax: In the “e-File” menu, click on the “e-Pay Tax” tab.

Initiate Payment: Choose the “New payment” option and click “Proceed” under the relevant tax payment tile (e.g., Self-Assessment Tax, Advance Tax, etc.).

Enter Tax Details: Select the assessment year, payment type, and the tax amount to be paid.

Choose Payment Mode: On the payment mode page, select “Net Banking” and choose your preferred bank.

Verify & Pay: Review all payment details, accept terms and conditions, and click on “Pay Now”.

Download Challan: After successful payment, download the challan for your records.

Option 2: Pay Without Logging into the Income tax e-Filing Portal

1. Visit the e-Pay Tax Page: Go to the e-Filing Portal and click on the “e-Pay Tax” option.

2. Enter Details: Provide your PAN number and mobile number to receive a 6-digit OTP.

3. OTP Verification: Enter the OTP and verify your details, including PAN/TAN and masked name.

4. Select Tax Category: it’s the most important step , as we choose the appropriate tax payment category and fill in the assessment year.

5. Enter Tax Amount: Enter the total tax amount and click “Continue”.

6 Choose Payment Mode: Select “Net Banking” and choose your bank from the list of authorized banks.

7. Verify & Pay: Confirm the details on the preview page, click “Pay Now”, accept the terms and conditions, and submit to the bank.

8. Download Challan: After payment, download the challan for your reference.

Checklist for tax payment

  • Ensure you have you PAN/TAN number ready
  • Registered mobile number
  • Ensure you select the correct assessment year and tax type.
  • Cross-check your details before making the payment.
  • Always keep a copy of the challan for future reference.
