Vivek Johri, Chairman

DO No. 10/CH(IC)/2023 Dated: 14th June, 2023

Dear Colleague,

Data analytics has emerged as a powerful tool in tax administration. With the ever-increasing complexity of financial transactions and vast amounts of data generated daily, there is a need for newer methods of tax enforcement to address the challenges presented by a rapidly evolving economic landscape.

This is where data analytics steps in, offering unprecedented opportunities to uncover hidden patterns, detect anomalies, and make informed decisions based on concrete evidence.

Leveraging advanced algorithms and machine learning techniques, data analytics can help sift through diverse data sources in order to identify irregularities, discrepancies and suspicious patterns that may indicate aberrant behavior. Furthermore, data analytics allows tax authorities to gain a comprehensive understanding of taxpayer behavior and compliance patterns.

The Advanced Analytics in Indirect Taxation (ADVAI7) suite of tools has been at the vanguard of this vital area of our work. I am happy to share that, in recognition of its compliance with international standards of best practice for Information Technology Service Management (ISTM), ADVAIT was awarded the ISO/ IEC 20000-1:2018 certification. This certification is an acknowledgement of our continued commitment to quality and to the integrity of our software infrastructure.

The week gone by also saw Team ADVAIT launch a new suite of applications. These include utilities for better analysis of assessments; enhanced visibility transaction made by GSTINs; and anomalies arising from information filed with the Department. I would encourage officers to make the most of these utilities and to provide their constructive feedback on the same. Heartiest Congratulations to Pr. Director General, Directorate of Systems 86 Data Management and his team for their initiative.

On the anti-smuggling side, acting on specific intelligence, officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) interdicted more than 10 kg of smuggled Gold secreted in a motor vehicle in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. In another case more than 12 kg foreign origin Gold was seized from passengers on board a train travelling to Delhi from Kolkata.

Before I sign off for the week, in most parts of the country, summer seems to be upon us in full force. I would urge you to take care of your health and to stay cool and hydrated and avoid meltdowns!

Till next week!

Yours Sincerely,

(Vivek Johri)
